IIT Madras is a hub for cutting-edge research with over 500 funded projects annually, numerous patents, and strong industry partnerships. Our research addresses global challenges in energy, health, environment, and technology.
Advanced research in solar photovoltaics, fuel cells, battery technologies, and smart grids. The National Centre for Photovoltaic Research and Education (NCPRE) at IITM is a leading facility for solar energy innovation.
Recent breakthroughs include low-cost perovskite solar cells with efficiency over 22% and development of hybrid energy storage systems for electric vehicles.
The Robert Bosch Centre for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (RBC-DSAI) conducts interdisciplinary research in machine learning, computer vision, natural language processing, and IoT.
Projects include AI for healthcare diagnostics, autonomous systems, financial forecasting, and agricultural optimization.

International students can apply through the Direct Admission of Students Abroad (DASA) scheme or through cultural exchange programs. IITM welcomes students from over 50 countries and offers need-based financial aid.

Tuition & Financial Aid
IIT Madras is committed to making education accessible to all deserving students. Tuition fees for undergraduate programs are approximately ₹2,00,000 per annum for general category students, with significant subsidies for SC/ST and economically weaker sections.
Merit-cum-means scholarships, institute fellowships, and industry-sponsored financial aid are available to over 40% of students. The institute also offers interest-free educational loans through partner banks.
Hostel & Accommodation
The institute provides on-campus housing for all students. There are 18 hostels (11 for men, 7 for women) with single and shared rooms, dining facilities, recreational areas, and 24/7 security. Hostel fees range from ₹50,000 to ₹80,000 per annum including meals.
International students have dedicated accommodation with additional support services including visa assistance and cultural orientation.
Campus Life
Beyond academics, IIT Madras offers a vibrant campus life with numerous clubs, sports facilities, cultural events, and student initiatives that foster holistic development.
Cultural Activities
Over 50 student clubs including music, dance, drama, photography, and literary societies. Annual festivals like Saarang (cultural fest) and Shaastra (technical fest) attract participants nationwide.

Extensive sports facilities including an Olympic-size swimming pool, tennis courts, gymnasium, cricket ground, and indoor stadium. The institute participates in inter-IIT sports tournaments.
Entrepreneurship
The IITM Incubation Cell supports student startups with funding, mentorship, and infrastructure. Over 200 startups have been launched with a cumulative valuation exceeding ₹5,000 crore.
